Buy a fanciful piece of furniture at DWR then walk to North Park Blocks and the Park Street Kitchen to celebrate with some of the most satisfying and inventive food in the city. Have a lovely glass of wine with your lunch and afterwards catch a show at the Portland Armory, the new home of Portland Center Stage. After the show, remember to buy that book you’ve been wanting at one of the best places in the universe, the original Powell’s Bookstore. Have I relished this specific afternoon, you may ask? “Yes, but not all at once.”
Northwest is one of Portland’s most intriguing neighborhoods. It offers a wide range of options from high-rise condos and lofts to palatial hillside dwellings. It’s easy to get around the city from here. The Portland Streetcar takes you downtown in minutes. This used to be a working-class area with huge brick warehouses within which you could drive a team of horses. Rejuvenation then arrived and Northwest Portland began to evolve from the inside out.
Today the industrial area and its many empty warehouses have been transformed into the Pearl: A district of lively nightlife, chic shops, theater, galleries and gourmet restaurants. Notable condo developments have developed towards the highest green standard, LEED Platinum. Northwest 23rd, is one of the most popular shopping and strolling streets, and sometimes affectionately referred to as “Northwest Trendy-Third.” Colorful Victorians, bungalows and Craftsman’s are still to be found literally right around the corner from shopping. This is a neighborhood full of character and energy offering the best in urban living. And if you need more green, just head down a trail in nearby Forest Park, the largest wilderness park within city limits in the U.S.
